We’ve seen the use of heat radars to show just how hot the ground and grass can get and how it can ultimately be uncomfortable for our pups.
It’s been a big concern of ours about protecting Ella’s paws from the super hot pavement in the summer or just to give her some traction when she’s hiking on rocks.
There are so many options out there. I happened to meet the owner of Saltsox at a convention and she sent us Lavasox Summer Boots to try and review. It’s a set of four booties that features a built-in radiant heat barrier in the sole to block sidewalk and road surface heat. The breathable mesh fabric keeps paws cool and the stretch velcro keeps the boots on.

This was our first experience and we had seen the videos of dogs walking like they just stumbled out of a bar after doing one too many shots. We braced ourselves to be laughing on the floor and we were not disappointed. Ella was hilarious. She was like a baby giraffe learning to walk for the first time, and she kicked her back legs and stumbled around. She didn’t seem to love them when we first put them on and that’s pretty common but after a while she got used to them and now she runs around with this sense of invincibility. She seems to be a fan of the rubber soles and how it grips to the ground.

Ella gets quite a bit of attention when she has her booties on and the most common question we get is how do you get your dog used to walking in them?
For those who are looking to get their dogs used to the booties. For video purposes and your entertainment, it’s of course fun to try them on at home for the first time in a contained location but once you get serious and want them to love it – I would highly recommend taking them on a short walk wearing the booties outside. Let them get used to wearing them while they’re on a leash doing a routine walk. Treats also helps to make it a positive experience.
